Sleeping Bus

Taking a sleeper bus was an interesting experience—I could actually lie down during the ride. However, there are several things worth considering when choosing a bus operator.

  • Seat size: The seat I had was quite small. Even for me (165 cm), it was impossible to fully stretch my legs.
  • Wi-Fi: I planned to watch some dramas during the trip, but the Wi-Fi connection was unstable and not very usable.
  • Bring your own food: Food at the rest stops along the way is extremely expensive, often two to three times the normal price.
  • Pick-up time: The company provides a shuttle to pick you up from your hotel, which sounds convenient, but the timing is not very strict. If some passengers are late, everyone ends up waiting, and it’s easy to lose contact with the driver during the wait.

Overall, this sleeper bus experience wasn’t particularly good—though it might just be an issue with this specific provider. If you plan to take a sleeper bus from Hanoi to Sapa, I recommend checking the points above carefully, or considering taking the train instead. The journey from Hanoi to Sapa takes about five hours in total.

Attraction

Cat Cat Village

Despite its name, Cat Cat Village doesn’t actually have any cats—though I did see a few dogs along the way. Visitors need to pay an entrance fee, but it’s definitely worth it. The village is very beautiful, especially the waterfall area.

There are also horses available for riding. You can pay to ride one and take photos on horseback while holding a bow and arrow, which looks quite cool. It only cost VND 30,000, so I think it was great value. However, the items sold at the roadside stalls are quite expensive, so if you want to buy anything, bargaining is recommended.

Fansipan

We visited Fansipan on the third day of our Sapa trip, the day before heading back. It was foggy in Sapa town that morning, so I hesitated because the cable car ticket isn’t cheap. The hostel owner suggested that we ask the ticket counter staff to show us a live photo of the summit before deciding—and that’s exactly what we did.

Luckily, the weather at the top was sunny, so we decided to go. The round-trip cable car ticket costs VND 800,000 per person. After reaching Fansipan, you can either walk or take a small train to the summit. The walk isn’t very long, and there are many great photo spots along the way.

At the summit, Vietnam’s national flag flies proudly—it was truly magnificent and an unforgettable experience. One thing to note: even though it was sunny, it was still very cold on the mountain, and I even got sunburned. So remember to wear sunscreen and bring warm clothing before heading up.

Food

BBQ in Night Market

There are several stalls at the Sapa night market selling BBQ. I tried two of them. You can either grill the food yourself or have the staff cook it for you. The food was tasty and reasonably priced. There are also dessert stalls selling local sweets, which were surprisingly good and worth trying.
