Singlish

Singlish is often described as efficient, and in daily life you’ll frequently hear abbreviations that can be quite confusing at first. Many short forms are commonly used in both conversations and text messages.

Singlish 常被說很有效率,在日常生活中真的會聽到很多縮寫,一開始其實蠻容易搞混的。不管是聊天還是傳訊息,大家都很常用這些簡寫。

At the beginning of the semester, the school organized a Singlish workshop for exchange students. It was both fun and practical. The workshop not only introduced common Singlish words but also explained how they are used in everyday situations. It was one of the most interesting orientation activities, and I learned a lot from it.

  • CCA:Co-Curricular Activity. These are school-based, non-academic activities such as sports teams, performing arts groups, clubs, and uniformed organizations. 也就是學校的課外活動,例如運動校隊、表演藝術、社團或制服團體等。
  • IVP:Inter-Varsity-Polytechnic. It refers to inter-school competitions. People sometimes use it informally to refer to varsity team players.指校際比賽。平常聊天時有時也會用來指校隊成員。
  • uni:university(大學)。
  • sem:semester(學期)。
  • mod:module(課程)。

When you first arrive, these abbreviations might feel overwhelming, but after a few weeks, you’ll probably start using them naturally without even noticing.
